When the Luxury Accommodation Collective (LA Collective) approached us for their Drifter Byron Bay project, they came with more than just a brief, they came with a vision. LA Collective is known for its design-led approach, giving each property a unique, immersive personality. They see signage not as an afterthought, but as a critical part of the design and build execution.

Our mission was to act as their fabrication partners. We needed to take their creative “design inspo” and meticulously translate it into tangible, high-quality “real world items.” This required a close, collaborative partnership to refine their ideas into executable, durable, and cost-effective solutions.

The Challenge: A Diverse, High-Concept Fitout

This job was a true test of versatility. The brief was a fabricator’s dream, demanding a huge range of specialised skills and materials. We had to create a cohesive experience using disparate elements, from modern, high-tech features to rustic, weathered finishes.

The challenge list included:

  • Bespoke, rust-finished lightboxes that looked authentically aged.
  • Complex, eye-catching infinity mirror signs.
  • Artisanal, hand-painted and routed door numbers for wayfinding.
  • Precise, large-scale clear glazing decals for a subtle branding touch.

Solution: Mastercraft Fabrication & Problem-Solving

Our team rose to the challenge by combining technical skill with artistic execution.

  • The “Old School” Rust Lightbox: The flagship piece was a custom-fabricated, double-sided blade lightbox. To create the weathered look, we built it with 20mm protruding logo elements. Our artists then applied a specialist rust-paint finish to the entire structure, meticulously leaving the letter faces clean. This high-contrast technique resulted in a stunning, old-school lightbox that felt like it had been part of the Byron Bay coast for decades.
  • Custom Timber Wayfinding: To integrate signage seamlessly into the interior, we router-cut custom floor panels from timber specified to match the hostel’s existing floors. We then embedded a custom design, infilling the backing and the number faces with custom-matched paint colours.
  • Bespoke Feature Elements: From engineering the captivating infinity mirrors to hand-painting smaller signs and applying crisp glazing decals, every piece was crafted in-house to ensure a consistent level of quality and durability worthy of a high-end accommodation brand.

The Outcome: A Happy Client & A Growing Partnership

The final fitout successfully captured the unique, rustic-yet-modern vibe of the Drifter brand. The LA Collective team was extremely happy with the outcome, which translated their creative vision into a physical, immersive experience for their guests. Our ability to execute complex, multi-disciplinary signage solutions and act as a true collaborative partner has solidified our relationship.
